Police investigating video of beating inside Genesee Valley mall

FLINT TWP., MICHIGAN– Township police say they are investigating the beating of a man inside the Macy’s store at the Genesee Valley Center this week, an assault captured on video and circulated on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.

In the video, a man wearing a cloth mask is talking on a cell phone when he’s punched in the head multiple times by another man.

“What are you doing that for?” the man who was punched asks after he was knocked to the floor, extending his hand to keep the man who hit him away.

The man who punched the other man stands over him on the ground, telling him to not touch him.

MLive-The Flint Journal could not immediately reach a spokeswoman for Genesee Valley Center regarding the incident, but township police Lt. Brad Wangler confirmed the department is investigating the incident captured in the video and what preceded it.

“Yes we are investigating and at this point, no one is in custody,” Wangler said in an email.

A Macy’s spokeswoman said both the store and the shopping mall have added security officers since the incident.

“We are deeply saddened about the incident that took place on Monday at Macy’s Genesee Valley as the safety of Macy’s customers and colleagues are our top priority,” Andrea Schwartz, senior director of media relations for Macy’s, said in an email to The Journal. We take these situations very seriously and are working closely with local authorities on this investigation, deferring all comments about the case to them per policy.”
